What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are swollen blood vessels that appear bluish and pop out on the surface of the skin. These types of veins, unlike spider veins that are smaller in size, are enlarged and prominent. They are mostly seen on the legs, but can also affect the foot.

Like spider veins, varicose veins are caused by a number of factors. Pregnancy, prolonged standing, excessive weight, family history, age (the over 40 crowd), and prior surgeries or trauma to the leg are some of the causes that contribute to developing varicose veins.

27% of the Irish population suffer from this condition, 90% of whom are women.

Signs and Symptoms of Varicose Veins

Unlike spider veins, which are smaller in appearance and usually cause little or no pain, varicose veins are larger and may produce discomfort and/or pain. Signs and symptoms may include:

  • varicose-veins2Prominent dark-blue blood vessels
  • Aching, throbbing, and/or burning feeling in the leg
  • Muscle cramping and/or swelling in the lower leg
  • Pain that gets work after standing for long periods
  • Itching around one or more of the veins
  • Firmness, pain or tenderness near the vein

Varicose veins are prone to developing blood clots in the superficial veins. These are often easily detected. Always contact a physician immediately if you experience any unusual symptoms.

Treatment Methods

"While some people seek treatment for cosmetic improvement, many men and woman seek relief from pain caused by discomfort and swelling in the legs.

First and most important when seeking varicose vein treatment, a patient should choose a qualified physician—whether a plastic surgeon, vascular surgeon or dermatologist. In some cases, seeing more than one specialist may be necessary.

Methods to treat varicose veins and the discomfort they cause include:

  • Schlerotherapy - The most common form of treatment for both spider and varicose veins. The doctor injects a solution into the vein that causes the wall to swell, stick together and seal shut. A few weeks later the vein should fade, but the same vein might be treated more then once.
  • Laser Surgery-This procedure sends very strong light pulses to the vein making the vein slowly close and disappear. Laser treatments are 15-20 minutes and two to five treatments may be needed.
  • Endovenous - Radiofrequency and laser-Treats deeper varicose veins and has replaced surgery for a vast majority of patients. The doctor puts a catheter into the vein, sending radiofrequencies or laser energy that will shrink and seal the vein walls. The procedure can be performed in the doctor's office.
  • Surgery -Surgical procedures are for veins that are really large. These procedures consist of surgical ligation and stripping, ambulatory phlebectomy and endoscopic vein surgery. A qualified surgeon will determine which surgery you should have.
