The Gastric Balloon also known as a Stomach Balloon is a non-surgical, weight-loss device for moderately obese individuals with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30 or more. The device itself is a soft, silicone balloon that is inserted via the mouth into the stomach and filled with sterile saline. The balloon is designed to partially fill the stomach, giving a feeling of fullness. Patients not only feel less hungry, but feel fuller more quickly after small meals. The balloon is removed after six months, with an average weight loss of around 20 kg, however, the total amount of weight loss depends on how well the person maintains lifestyle changes related to eating and exercise.

The Procedure

The Gastric Balloon is inserted through a simple endoscopic procedure taking less than 20 minutes. The procedure is often performed in an out-patient clinic and the patient can return home the same day. The Gastric Balloon is adjustable to suit the paitent's needs and will be adjusted in the same way.

Removal of the Gastric Balloon

The Gastric Balloon is normally removed in the same way it was placed, via an endoscopic procedure. Prior to removal, you will be given a muscle relaxant and a topical anesthetic will be applied to numb the throat. Using an endoscopic camera, the physician will introduce a catheter through the mouth and into the stomach. The balloon will then be drained of the Celine fluid and deflated. Once the balloon is drained it can be grasped and removed easily.



Aftercare following the Gastric Balloon

Auralia cosmetics offer a comprehensive aftercare programme for six months after your procedure. Our registered, expert medical team are readily accessible to support you with any concerns you may have following your procedure.

After completing the procedure:

  • You will have access to twenty-four hour telephone support after the procedure.
  • You will receive daily telephone checks for one week after the procedure
  • You will have monthly follow up sessions with your surgeon/ dietician for six months after your procedure


Over the course of the six months our medical team will deal with all aspects of your aftercare from monitoring your progress to advice on diet, exercise regime and long term weight loss management plan
