The Complete Guide To Breast Augmentation In Ireland

29 September 20

Breast augmentation (or a ‘boob job’ as it’s more commonly referred to) is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgeries in the entire world.

Breast augmentation can be used to help women who are unhappy with their chest to help enhance their figure and confidence. It can help correct asymmetry, add volume, restore fullness, and it can also correct drooping or sagging.

If you’re considering getting breast augmentation surgery, you probably have a lot of questions. It’s important to stay informed and learn everything you can about breast enhancement surgery before making any final decisions.

To help answer the most common questions about breast augmentation, we’ve put together this extensive guide on everything you need to know about breast augmentation in Ireland.

How does breast augmentation surgery work?

Breast augmentation is designed to help women looking for bigger breasts or those hoping to bring some balance to their asymmetrical breasts. It can also help women restore their breast volume which often decreases as a result of pregnancy, weight loss, or the ageing process.

Breast surgery is generally carried out under a general anaesthetic. It usually lasts around 50 minutes in total. During the surgery, your surgeon will make a 5-6 cm incision beneath the breast. This allows them access to the tissues behind the breast.

The surgeon creates some space or a ‘pocket’ behind the breast tissue, or behind the muscle. The breast implant is then placed into this space or pocket and the incision sewn up with dissolvable sutures.

After surgery, you’ll more than likely be discharged the same day. You’ll even be able to shower and perform very light work by the following morning.

What are the different types of breast implants?

There are two types of silicone implants available:

  • Round
  • Teardrop

The shape you choose really depends on what kind of look you want to achieve and what your existing shape already looks like.

For example, if you have small breasts and don’t want that Hollywood/Baywatch look then you’d be better suited to teardrop-shaped implants for a more natural look.

If you’re unsure of what implant you’d like to get, discuss with your surgeon about what shape you’re looking for. They’ll be more than happy to help you find the perfect shape for your breasts. We do have teardrop implants that are guaranteed not to rotate or move.

How long do breast implants last?

Unless there is an issue with your breast implants, they usually don’t need replacing. You can consult your doctor for more information on your specific implants.

What are the risks involved with breast augmentation?

All surgeries, cosmetic or otherwise carry risks. No matter how safe they are performed, there will always be a risk of infection, scarring, and even pain.

You’ll have to talk frankly and honestly with your surgeon. If you have any worries or concerns about the possible risks involved with your surgery, let them know.

All possible risks should be clearly talked about with you before you make any final decisions. It’s a good idea to get a copy of the risks in writing so you can sit down at home, read them and go through them in your own time.

If you have any questions make sure to ask your surgeon straight away, so they can help answer any concerns you might have.

How long does it take to recover from breast augmentation?

After breast augmentation surgery you’ll probably be able to return to work after 7 days of rest.

You should try to keep your scar tissue out of direct sunlight for about a year to avoid causing damage to the tissue. You shouldn’t apply fake tan in that time period either.

There is minimal bruising with breast enlargement surgery so the soreness should go away within a couple of weeks. Breast implants shouldn’t interfere with breastfeeding and it’s safe to have breast cancer screening tests with implants in.

How much does breast augmentation cost?

The price of breast implants in Ireland varies between providers.

Factors that can influence the price of implants include the type and quality. The implants themselves can cost between €200 and €1000 each so make sure you know which implant type you’re getting, as this will influence the overall cost. The quality of the implant will affect the need for future surgery.

Like any surgery, cost should not be your main concern. You should look for the best results when receiving any kind of surgery, so be sure to look into your clinic of choice thoroughly.

Don’t take the cheap option. If something goes wrong it’ll be even more expensive to fix. You’re better off going to a surgeon who can provide you with excellent care.
