HOME / BREAST REDUCTION

Thinking about breast reduction? You have the power to decide what’s right for your body.

Making breasts smaller is only one of the many facets of breast reduction surgery (Mastopexy). So much more than simply reducing breast size, the true goals of breast reduction are beautiful breasts, achieved through enhancement of breast shape, position, projection, proportion and decreased volume. The improvement of breast aesthetics, physical comfort, and self-confidence can be dramatic. Large, heavy breasts have so many drawbacks – neck, back and shoulder pain, the discomfort and cost of restrictive bra support, as well as as well as irritation beneath the breasts, particularly in warmer weather. Enlarged breasts, or breast hypertrophy, may have developed over time as a result of pregnancy or weight gain. There may also be a low-lying position of the breasts with droop or sag, as well as a nipple areola enlargement. Diet and exercise can have significant impact on breast size for some, however weight loss cannot correct droop or positioning. For many, breast reduction is an ideal way to get the shape they want. At your consultation we talk you through the different methods of mastopexy and advise you as to what is best for you.

About this treatment

01.

Background to the procedure

Breast reduction involves removing of excess breast tissue alongside a reduction in the excessive amount of breast skin (mastopexy). Because breast tissue is glandular and is not predominantly made up of fat this is why liposuction, in isolation, cannot be used to reduce breast volume.

Your doctor will go through the technical details of this procedure with you during your consultation. There are different methods to perform the mastopexy and your doctor will advise you as to what is best for you.

02.

What to expect at my consultation

All consultations are private one-on-one sessions with Dr. Salman that normally last 30-40 minutes. During that time, the patient and surgeon will discuss their expectations for the results of the breast reduction, including size and shape. The surgeon will also investigate the medical history of the breast lift surgery candidate, to ensure that the procedure is appropriate for the individual.

As part of the process, Dr. Salman will give you the opportunity to examine photographs of patients, so that you can see for yourself what to expect from breast reduction surgery. He will discuss with you the shape of breasts that you desire, the possible surgical techniques to get your desired effect, and how your frame, height and other features affect your choices. It is important that you and your doctor agree on the aesthetics and mechanics of your surgery in order to obtain the results that you want.

03.

What is involved with breast reduction surgery

All surgery is performed by Dr Salman himself – Ireland’s leading expert in breast cosmetic surgery – at our state of the art facility in Park West, Dublin.

Breast reduction surgery is always carried out under a general anesthetic and takes approximately 2-3 hours. When you wake up from your surgery you can expect to experience some level of discomfort so you will be prescribed appropriate pain relief, which will be administered by your nurse.

04.

What is the recovery after breast reduction surgery?

After the surgery you will be discharged with some antibiotics, painkillers and anti-inflammatory tablets to speed up your recovery and a friend should drive them home from the hospital. You will be supplied with a bra to support the breasts as underwired bras can irritate the scars.

The wounds will be dressed with waterproof dressings that are splash proof and thus one can shower and even wash your hair. There may be bruising and some degree of swelling but most of the bruising will have resolved within the first two weeks after surgery. One week after surgery a wound check is carried by Dr. Salman but all stitching is with dissolvable sutures so no sutures need to be removed.

For most occupations one can return to work within 1 week but vigorous exercise and activities should be refrained for the first 6 weeks after surgery. It will take 3-6 months before the breasts assume their final appearance.

05.

What are the risks of complication?

All surgery, including cosmetic surgery, carries risks. Any potential complications will be discussed during consultation and you will be given a copy in writing.

Cosmetic surgery aftercare is a very crucial part of recovering correctly and the success of your surgery will depend on how well you look after yourself afterwards as advised by your surgeon. FAQs

How do I prepare for breast surgery?

Stop taking any aspirin or aspirin containing products as these may increase the risk of bleeding. Also any non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Brufen or Volterol such should be stopped, as should any Vitamin E tablets or multi vitamins containing vitamin E.

It is advisable to take 1 gm vitamin C twice a day to improve wound healing.

If your surgery is planned for the morning it is wise to have a shower the night before using a medicated shower gel/body scrub (e.g. hibiscrub or hydrex) and wash ones hair. Nail polish should be removed prior to surgery for the anaesthetic equipment requirement.

Dress in loose clothing with a shirt and zip-up top and/or cardigan (as opposed to a pullover) as lifting ones arms may be sore initially after surgery. Also pack the sports bra to wear after surgery along with usual toiletries for overnight stay.
