Face & Neck Lift

Restore a youthful appearance, decrease visible signs of ageing and smooth out lines and wrinkles

As we age, the effects of gravity, the sun and UV rays, and lifestyle attributes can accelerate the signs of ageing to an undesirable state, making even the most beautiful face appear saggy, droopy, sad, old, and tired. With regard to the neck, the sagging of the skin and neck muscles result in either a double chin appearance or a less defined jaw and neckline. Getting a face and/or a neck lift is a great way not only to restore your appearance but to give you back a sense of confidence and make you feel as good as you look.

Face lifts are designed to reduce the slackness in the tissues of the face; a face lift tightens muscle, fat and skin, producing a more youthful, rested appearance. Facelift surgery should not, contrary to public opinion, make the face look tight, instead return the facial soft tissues to where they were in youth. Face lift surgery is often done at the same time with other facial corrective surgeries to maximize time, money and healing. It also yields better results when done in conjunction with a related procedure, such as a neck lift to fix sagging neck skin or neck folds. There are a number of face lift options, including the mid and mini-face lifts.

About this treatment

Background to the procedure

For many patients, the key issues corrected by face lift surgery include sagging jowls, loose neck skin, and fat accumulation under the chin (double chin).

There are some variations in face lift techniques, depending upon the specific individual facial constructions, and the intended outcome of the face lift surgery. Generally speaking, face lift procedures only address the two-thirds of the face, although a surgery can combine both face lift and eyelid surgery or brow lift.

What would I expect at the consultation?

All consultations are private one-on-one sessions with Dr. Salman that normally last 30-40 minutes. During that time a full medical history is taken to confirm suitability for surgery. Dr. Salman with discuss and determine with the patient reasonable expectations for face & neck lift results, depending upon the patient’s facial bone structure, and specific problems to be addressed by the procedure. Specific recommendations will be made on the type of lift procedure and any additional facial treatments.

Mid-face lift

For individuals with sagging cheeks but no jowls or banding of the neck, a mid-face lift may be the best solution. Often relying on endoscope cameras and other technological advances, mid-face lifts target the skin and muscle tissue in the cheeks, tightening and smoothing the appearance. Most persons opting for a mid-face lift are addressing deep marionette lines or nasolabial folds. These can be addressed with Gore-Tex implants or injectable materials, but a mid-face lift is often more effective and the results last considerably longer.

Mini face lift

Younger patients may opt for a minimized lift known as a mini face lift to obtain a youthful, fresh look without the effort of traditional face lift surgery. The advantage to a mini face lift is that it is tailored to meet specific needs, focusing primarily on any trouble spots. A mini face lift can address specific areas of the neck, jowls, mid-face, or nasolabial folds. Endoscopic mini face lifts use tiny incisions behind the hairline and inside the mouth to lift muscle and skin tissue.

What is the recovery like after face lift surgery?

After the surgery most patients are in fact either pain free or have mild pain that is controlled with pain killing tablets. There will be some minor swelling in the first 24 hours after surgery. The sutures are removed when one returns to the clinic at day 5 post op. Any bruising will dissipate within the first 10 days fading to a light yellow colour that can be covered up with some foundation at that stage. At six weeks post op, one can resume vigorous exercise and while there will be a very gradual ‘settling’ underneath the skin essentially one is completely recovered by this stage.

Neck lift

Neck lift surgery, or platysmaplasty, removes excess skin and fatty tissue from the neck and tightens neck muscles to redefine the jaw line, restore a normal chin and create a younger, fitter looking facial appearance. Good candidates for neck lift surgery include patients with sagging neck skin or neck folds. Age often causes the neck to droop and jowls to form. People opt for neck lift surgeries to combat these changes.

Neck lift surgery is often done at the same time with other facial corrective surgeries to maximise time, money and healing. It also yields better results when done in conjunction with a related procedure, such as a face lift to fix lower and mid-face sagging.

What is involved in neck lift surgery?

Neck lifts can be done through an incision under the chin or through minimal incisions hidden behind the ears. When done at the same time as the facelift, the neck skin is lifted and re-draped over the tightened neck muscles. When a neck lift is performed separately from a facelift or other procedure, the neck muscle is tightened through behind-the-ear incisions, and the excess skin is removed.

Performed under general or local anesthesia, neck lift surgery usually takes one to two hours. It is an outpatient surgery that takes place in an office operating room. Neck lifts usually require a week of recovery time before returning to work.

What are the risks of complication?

All surgery, including cosmetic surgery, carries risks. Any potential complications will be discussed during consultation and you will be given a copy in writing.

FAQs

Will people notice that I have had a facelift?

Most patients are concerned at how they will appear after surgery both in the short and longer term. Thus the aim is a very natural subtle improvement such that nobody should notice that the patient has had surgery, just that the patient looks ‘well or fresher.’ Face lift surgery should not, contrary to public opinion, make the face look tight instead it returns the facial soft tissues to where they were in youth.

How do I prepare for face and neck lift surgery?

2 weeks pre-operatively

Stop taking any aspirin or aspirin containing products as these may increase the risk of bleeding. Also any non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Brufen or Volterol such should be stopped, as should any Vitamin E tablets or multi vitamins containing vitamin E. Patients should stop smoking also.

1 week pre-operatively

It is advisable to take 1 gm vitamin C twice a day to improve wound healing.

The day of surgery

On the day of your surgery, wear a button-up shirt that does not need to be pulled on or off over your head. Do not apply any lotion, makeup or skin creams on your face or neck.
