Male Breast Reduction

Such a common treatment with fantastic results

Enlargement of the male breast area, or gynaecomastia causing breast tissue to overdevelop affects about 30% of men. Commonly referred to as ‘man boobs’, this can be the source of significant embarrassment and self-consciousness. Male breast reduction can alleviate physical discomfort and social distress related to the problem. A more defined chest will not only improve posture and self confidence but also social and physical activities. Simply being able to go to the pool or beach, or wear a T-shirt without feeling self-conscious! Potential male breast reduction candidates should meet with the surgeon to discuss the various options. For some men, excess breast tissue can be reduced or eliminated through diet and exercise; male breast reduction by surgical means is usually conducted only when other methods have failed.

About this treatment

Background to the procedure

Male breast reduction specifically addresses the problems faced by men with gynecomastia, by helping eliminate embarrassing excess breast and fatty tissue to reveal greater pectoralis muscle definition underneath. Breast reduction for men is a surprisingly common procedure.

Your doctor will go through the technical details of this procedure with you during your consultation and will advise you as to what is best for you.

What would I expect at the consultation?

All consultations are private one-on-one sessions with Dr. Salman that normally last 30-40 minutes. During that time a full medical history is taken to confirm suitability for surgery. During the consultation he will discuss the procedure and the choices available to help you get the look you want.

During the consultation, the patient is in driving seat and any questions and concerns can be addressed to ensure the patient can be confident in making an informed choice. At this time, you can also view our state of the art facilities, and meet our friendly, qualified, and experienced staff.

What is involved with male breast reduction surgery

Modern methods of male breast reduction differ significantly from the older techniques. For many years, the surgery for male breast reduction left significant scarring and required the use of general anaesthesia, raising risk factors for patients. Male breast reduction now generally uses liposuction to remove fat from under the skin. The more modern methods of male breast reduction eliminate the need for general anaesthesia in most cases, and the tools used in male breast reduction through liposuction can be inserted using tiny incisions, so that this type of male breast reduction causes very little scarring by comparison.

What is the recovery after male breast reduction surgery

Most patients return to work within a week of undergoing male breast reduction. The liposuction method is much less painful and causes less tissue trauma, so patients of this form of male breast reduction generally recover more quickly and experience less postoperative stiffness and pain. Using liposuction alone for male breast reduction may not be effective for patients whose gynecomastia results from glandular disorders.

What are the risks of complication?

All surgery, including cosmetic surgery, carries risks. Any potential complications will be discussed during consultation and you will be given a copy in writing.

Aftercare

Patient care has always been at the forefront of everything we do, this is why we are a leading cosmetic surgery provider in Ireland. Cosmetic surgery aftercare is a very crucial part of recovering correctly and the success of your surgery will depend on how well you look after yourself afterwards as advised by your surgeon.
