Birthmark Removal
Lighten or clear birthmarks with expert laser removal treatment
About this treatment
Background to the procedure
Birthmark removal involves the use of lasers which provide heat causing swollen vessels to grow old and die, removing their intense coloration. Birthmark removal is done with a pulsed, Q-switched or Continuous Wave laser. These laser types all pass light through the surface of the skin in order to break down pigments and lesions. The lasers also help in preventing the spread of the birthmark as well.
What would I expect at the consultation?
All consultations are private one-on-one sessions that normally last 15-20 minutes. Your Doctor will talk you through the procedure, any concerns you may have and your expectations of the results.
What is involved with Birthmark Removal?
During treatment, pulsed, Q-switched or Continuous Wave lasers provide heat which causes swollen vessels to grow old and die, removing their intense coloration. While the birthmark may not be entirely removed in some cases, successful treatments can lighten or cause the area to be completely cleared of abnormal coloration.
A Continuous Wave laser focuses the laser’s energy in a constant beam over the affected area. A pulsed laser only emits its energy in short, yet rhythmic, bursts allowing the laser to heat the affected area just enough to get the targeted pigmentation. Pulsed lasers typically only give enough heat to affect a very small area and then move on. Q-Switched lasers are a type of pulsed laser that saves up energy in order to provide extremely high dosages in short increments.
What is the recovery after Birthmark Removal?
Patients can experience sensitivity, bruising of fading of the treatment area. As with all treatments, it is advisable to consider recovery and any social events if the treatment area is visible.
Your Doctor will advise if there is anything you need to avoid following treatment such as makeup, extensive sun or heat exposure.
What are the risks of complication?
Any potential complications will be discussed during consultation and you will be given a copy of all of this information in advance, and in writing.

FAQs
When birthmarks can be removed
Early birthmark removal is usually most effective because the marks do not have time to mature and expand. The treatments for early birthmark removals usually do not take as many visits as removals done later in life. All birthmark removals require multiple office visits and several different types of treatments combined.
Does birthmark removal hurt?
Patients may feel mild pain, like a rubber band snapping at the skin or some experience a transient, mild burning sensation, but most people find the discomfort bearable.
How many treatments are needed?
The number of treatments required varies for each person. This depends on the characteristics unique to each birthmark. The results are accumulative and you can start seeing results after just a couple of treatments. The frequency of treatment is usually every 4 weeks. We have found that on average most people require between 4 to 12 treatments for the optimum results.
What will my skin look like afterwards?
The skin may appear pink, red or brown immediately after the treatment, however this should mostly reduce over 24 hours. You may experience reactions such as skin sensitivity and should avoid sun exposure straight after treatment.
