Background to the procedure

The specific methods used in ear pinning can vary slightly based upon the patient’s’ needs and desired outcomes. Generally, an ear pinning involves making an incision in the fold behind the ear, removing some skin and/or cartilage and pinning the ear with permanent sutures. In some cases, the surgeon performing the ear pinning will remove a sliver of cartilage from the ear and suture the gap shut, allowing it to fuse together closer to the head. This technique can also be used to perform an ear pinning that reduces the size of the ears in addition to repositioning them.

Most ear pinning procedures are performed under light sedation, or just local anaesthesia, although very small children may be given general anaesthesia to prevent fidgeting. Usually, an ear pinning takes around two hours to complete and the patient may return home immediately following surgery.

What would I expect from my consultation

All consultations are private one-on-one sessions with Dr. Salman that normally last 30-40 minutes. During that time a full medical history is taken to confirm suitability for surgery.

In this initial consultation, Dr. Salman will determine the extent of fat deposits in your abdominal region, and carefully assess your skin tone. He will have a frank discussion with you about your goals and desires, and will inform you about the best techniques available, describing your alternatives and the risks and limitations of each.

What are the risks of complication?

Complications from ear surgery/otoplasty are highly uncommon. However, all surgery, including cosmetic surgery, carries risks. Any potential complications will be discussed during consultation and you will be given a copy in writing.

Will having ear correction surgery affect my hearing?

Having ear correction surgery will not affect your hearing in any way.

Can children have ear correction surgery?

Ears are one of the first parts of the body to develop to full adult size and the ear is fully developed at the age of 4. So, as long as children are healthy and not prone to chronic ear infections, at least four years old and are cooperative, they might be able to undergo the otoplasty procedure.

How do I prepare for ear correction surgery?

2 weeks pre-operatively

Stop taking any aspirin or aspirin containing products as these may increase the risk of bleeding. Also any non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Brufen or Volterol such should be stopped, as should any Vitamin E tablets or multi vitamins containing vitamin E. Patients should stop smoking also.

1 week pre-operatively

It is advisable to take 1 gm vitamin C twice a day to improve wound healing.

The day of surgery

On the day of your surgery, wear a button-up shirt that does not need to be pulled on or off over your head.
