Learn how you can start specializing in cosmetic surgery in Ireland and find out what it’s like to be a cosmetic surgeon by reading our insiders’ guide.

How to specialize in cosmetic surgery in Ireland

If you’re thinking about specializing in cosmetic surgery then you’re going to have to get the necessary training needed to become a cosmetic surgeon.

If you choose to take this path then you’ll probably have to undergo:

  • Higher Specialist training, which usually takes about 6 years to complete
  • Intercollegiate Fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
  • Subspecialty training, which is usually completed abroad

It’s not an easy road to embark on but becoming a cosmetic or plastic surgeon in Ireland is rewarding in a number of ways. You get to have an exciting career full of opportunities and you get to help people get the bodies they’ve always wanted.

At Auralia, we offer a unique opportunity for our surgeons to achieve the experience and accreditation that they need to qualify as a cosmetic surgeon in Ireland.

Who should become a cosmetic surgeon?

Becoming a cosmetic surgeon isn’t for everybody – but how do you know it’s right for you?

Here are three things you should consider before deciding to become a cosmetic surgeon.

1. Do you enjoy plastic surgery?

Enjoying the work is the first step to knowing that you’ve chosen the right job. If you don’t enjoy cosmetic surgery, then there would be little point in specialising in it!

Plastic surgery has a lot of innovative and exciting aspects to it. The industry is constantly evolving, and new techniques are shared continually through the community. By shadowing different plastic surgeons, you’ll learn that the field is incredibly diverse, and each surgeon has their own techniques and way of doing things.

Each procedure is vastly different too, and you’ll experience new and exciting challenges at every corner. For example, scrubbing into a microsurgical procedure will feel a whole lot different than doing any aesthetics.

2. You have to be painfully precise

When it comes to cosmetic surgery, you’re going to have to be incredibly precise regarding the details. You’ll need to be meticulous in your procedures to ensure that your patient gets the flawless results they deserve (and are paying for).

If you think mastering the art of suturing is boring and dull and you’d prefer just to staple your enclosures, then we’d consider looking elsewhere. Plastic surgery is a fine art, and everything has to be perfect for the patient.

3. You’re going to be working hard

Working in plastic surgery isn’t an easy job. You’re going to have to work hard to get to a skill level and position you’re happy with. The industry is incredibly competitive, so if you’re not a hard worker, you won’t get very far.
